SENIORS
Abracadabra! And with one masterly sweep of his magical wand, Merlin had returned! Also seems the TWM may have wagged the second day of the two day Lion Tamers course. The clear message from them was to be ‘HARD’; HARD running, HARD attack at the ball and HARD attack on the ball carrier. The Lions had noted goal-kicking forwards and our back six knew that a big effort would be required. We were out of the blocks like a shot! Echo to Trenna to JC. Goal. Becky to Bowlsie to Shanno to Barto. Straight through the ‘hey-diddle-diddle’. Hicksie was rewarded for a great tackle at CHF and found Trenna deep in the Tally pocket. 40 out and into the breeze, he slotted it as cool as a cucumber. Endeavour was great. The pill was being shared around. We were running HARD and HARD at it. A free to Barto 30m out, straight in front, gave him his second. Back six were great. We were up and about. Qtr time scores 4.3 to 2.3. We leaked a couple of goals early in the second before getting back on track. Congo was doing a great job on his direct. A classic tap from Moo to DC and he sent us forward. JC gathered and drove us deep into the teeth of the goals where Big Jack clunked a trademark ripper. Goal. Boundary throw-in and Big Jack to Tater. Tater to the goal square found Diesel at full stretch above the pack and we clocked up another six. It was fierce, it was HARD and had become a real arm wrestle, but we had our noses in front by the barest of margins. Half time scores 6.6 to 6.5. A slight tweak to our forward structure with DC now playing deep. Joey’s rebound from half back found Echo free in the middle. He found DC who gave off to Shanno then to Diesel for his second. Someone declared a 20 minute rest break but forgot to tell Mulwala. A melee broke in the Netballer’s Pocket and Congo was rested for 15. Fergie was plucked from obscurity to keep him company. We were two down and fighting HARD to stay in touch. A scramble from the pack squirted out to Tater who found Shanno at half forward, a lace out pass to the charging Echo saw him shooting from 30. Goal. Three quarter time scores 8.9 to 13.7. It was becoming HARD to watch. The highlight of the final quarter was Merlin pulling his latest trick out of the bag, The Inverted Stand. Apparently it’s was all the rage at the wizard’s convention! I believe he was about to launch into a break dancing routine, but was rudely interrupted by his Mulwala opponent running around him as if he was a witches hat and launching towards goal. It’s HARD to run on your hands. Final scores 8.12 to 16.13. Another improved showing by the Magoos following the signing of big Dang’ers. Bar-ooooo-ga .......sounds like a truck horn. Let’s smash’em. ROADKILL
Reserves:
Following on from our good recent form our reserves had a fair old crack but unfortunately we could not come away with the points. Our start to the game wasn’t great allowing Mulwala to some easy shots at goal causing us to chase our tail for the rest of the game. Our endeavour was excellent and by the end of the 3rd quarter we were down by a couple of goals and really confident of finishing the game off in the last. We conceded a goal early in the last to what was one of many contentious decisions throughout the game and unfortunately could not kick a winning score. We had a number of fantastic efforts with the whole team performing very well. The best included Paul Simpson, Adrian Hickey, Tom Ratten, Alex Hall, Lucas Jeffery and Colin Colger.
Under 17:
Congupna arrived at the ground on Saturday morning looking forward to taking on the top side and the challenge ahead of them. The boys started well and actually kicked the first goal of the game. The boys continued to play a very disciplined game of footy and although beaten by a very good side they could hold their heads high as they played the game right out. Goal kickers were Anthony, Muscles and Brayden and better players were Snowy, Ringy, Pud, Jaco, Kobe, Sid and Brayden.
Under 14:
Last week our young guns put in one of the best performances of the season when we took on the Mulwala Lions. Earlier in the season the Lions had our measure but last week we matched them in most areas. Our first half was exceptional and we trailed by only 3 goals at the main break. Our third quarter was a Johnny Rocker letting them bound clear from the middle and score too easily. But our last stanza was outstanding, outscoring them and working well as a team. Every single player contributed, with no passengers.Awards went to Fyfey (Meal Voucher) - pivotal for us in and around the ball, Jake Organ (Bottle & Beanie) repelled many an opposition attack and improving every game, Broph (Congupna Shop) whose 2 goals kept us in the match and worked hard in tight contests, Aid Shanno (Sportsfirst) - started brilliantly and kept his speed and endeavour throughout the morning, Cooper Bromley (Trelly’s) - never gave up and worked his butt off down back. With special mentions to Jordie Gee, Paddy Jaco, Sammy Slavich & Luke Bartels who all played terrific games for the Road.
It was a good effort and the lads should be proud of their commitment to training, the way they approach their football, never giving up even when losing to older, stronger and more experienced opposition. We’re very proud of your efforts & lets make the next 5 rounds our best.
