19th June, 2010 v. Echuca United (Match played at Nathalia).
Adam Quarrell or Squidge, as he is widely known, will play his 300th Senior game for the Nathalia Football Club against Echuca United on Saturday the 19th June. Squidge will become only the second player in the club’s history to notch up this milestone.
Squidge has been a magnificent player for the club over many years, starting his senior career in 1992. In 1998 he left Nathalia to play seniors at Kyabram in GVFL .
Returning to Nathalia in 1999 he soon took on the captaincy, a role in which he made his own. His commitment and dedication to the team and club was undoubtedly what gained him the respect of not only his team mates but also the loyal supporters of the club. Squidge continued as senior captain until eventually and deservedly captaining Nathalia to its breakthrough premiership in 2005. Unselfishly it was at the 2005 club Presentation night that Squidge decided to hand over his captaincy, so that his successor may also (hopefully) enjoy the highlight of being a premiership captain. This is true “Squidge” style.
Originally playing as a forward and midfielder, he has moved into defence in recent seasons with outstanding success and became part of the premiership back six of 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, and by his former coaches own admission, this back six was the key to Nathalia’s premiership success. His success in this role also won him the right to represent the Murray League in their 2008 Interleague win at the VCFL Championships at Stawell.
Squidge has also been in charge of recruiting for many years and much of Nathalia’s recent success can be attributed to his on and off field contributions. The additional hours that Squidge has put in to the club behind the scenes would only be known to a few. He has worked tirelessly to find players and coaches, and most importantly keep the winning combination of local blokes (his mates) together as a united team throughout their premiership success. His dedication to the team and the club is still strong, travelling from Yarrawonga to train two nights a week.
Squidge is such a modest and humble person and player. To reach this magnificent milestone is an amazing effort, though he isn’t sure what all the fuss is about.
Congratulations Adam “Squidge” Quarrell on 300 senior games for the Nathalia Football Club.
The Nathalia Football Netball Club will pay tribute to Squidge’s brilliant football career with a Testimonial on Saturday July 31st. See Dave Liddell or Simon Quarrell for more details.
When Squidge found out about his testimonial he said, “I shouldn’t be having a testimonial........I’m no Brendon Parker.” And our response to that is, “No you are not Brendon Parker but you are Adam “Squidge” Quarrell.” Enough said!!
