Poowong FNC elect a new President

After 11 years at the helm Peter Notman stood down from the Presidency and Club stalwart Ted Attenborough was elected unopposed at the Annual General Meeting of the PFNC held on the 15^th October.

It was a tremendous turnout of club members with the executive made up of Ted as President, Darren Motton remains as Senior Vice President, Cole Attenborough comes in as Junior Vice President, Joe Green remains as Secretary and Peter and Keith Fort will again share the treasurers role.

Melissa McNally will also continue to lead our netballers in her role as Netball President.

It was also great to see many young faces that will be joining the General Committee this year and they include:

It was also great to see local identities Merve Clink and Rod Parkinson volunteering to join the committee and our very own photographer Jeff Tull has also come on board. Lorraine Connell has also offered her services which will be greatly appreciated.

On taking the chair Ted thanked Peter for his unprecedented contribution to the Club as an 11 year President and looked forward to Peter’s ongoing involvement in the Club.

This is a great start to the 2016-year, having so many people wanting to be involved – so now it is a matter of keeping the ball rolling.

Poowong FNC hosts Holland, Robertson & Nixon

FORMER AFL stars Brodie Holland & Russell Robertson will make a special guest playing appearance at Poowong Football & Netball Club against Nilma Darnum this Saturday June 20th at Poowong.

Sports agent Ricky Nixon will then host a Sports Auction & Social Night following the game from 6.30pm.

Brodie Holland

155-game ex-AFL player BRODIE HOLLAND played for both Fremantle and Collingwood between 1998 and 2008. Brodie was a runner up in the Collingwood Best & Fairest in 2005. Brodie kicked 141 goals throughout his career.

He has taken part on Dancing with the Stars, where he made the final four, has appeared in advertisements, been a panellist on the AFL Footy Show, and made the obligatory cameo appearance in soap opera, Neighbours.

Russell Robertson

Russell Roberston grew up in Penguin, Tasmania and was drafted in 1997 by Melbourne. He had a distinguished career with Melbourne playing 228 games between 1997 and 2009. He was their leading goalkicked in 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Russell won the Melbourne Best and Fairest, the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal in 2005, as well as featuring in the AFL International Rules series in 2005.

Ricky Nixon

High profile sports agent and former AFL/VFL footballer Ricky Nixon played 63 games with Carlton, St Kilda and Hawthorn between 1983 and 1993. Nixon established Flying Start in 1994 which become one of the leading sports management companies in Australia. Flying Start featured star players including Gary Ablett, Sr., Wayne Carey, Jason Dunstall, Tony Lockett and Garry Lyon.

Double Header Weekend

Poowong Football & Netball Club and Poowong-Loch Junior Football Club will be playing in a Double Header Weekend this Saturday April 25th & Sunday April 26th.

Poowong-Loch JFC, the BULLS, will play at Loch Memorial Reserve on ANZAC Day, with an ANZAC Day ceremony to be held from 10.30am prior to the Under 14 match between our BULLS & Yarragon.

Poowong FNC will clash with close rival Nyora for The Demon Cup on Sunday at Poowong Recreation Reserve.

Our 125^th Year Anniversary Companions

The Footy Show,

I would like to introduce myself, Peter Notman, President of the Poowong Football & Netball Club for the past ten years. This year, our historic community club is celebrating its 125th Anniversary, and I am determined to celebrate the past and look forward to the future with some innovative ideas.

Our football club has worked hard, yet have struggled to make finals (and in the past two years only winning one game).

Over the past ten years we have fought extremely hard to nurture our and support our 13 teams in both football and netball. With a town and surrounding area population of just 610 people it has been important to create strong community spirit and culture. Over this period we funded many projects focusing on strengthening the culture and improving facilities of our club (with little or no help from local, state and federal governments).

We propose the following:

Paint one of your sponsors logo (larger than that at the MCG) on the Poowong Recreation Reserve Oval for the 2015 & 2016 seasons.
Heavily promote this campaign through local and state media outlets, social and digital media in partnership with your marketing team.

The outcome is to generate media interest of our club and your organisation to pay for the costs of this unique advertising campaign. We believe our costs would be $30,000 for the 2015 season. So we are hoping to achieve a $40,000 sponsorship.

We would love to discuss our idea as we are super keen to exist for a further 125 years. If you would like to know more about our club or support to 2015 campaign, please email or call at your convenience.

EDFL reverts back to 1 Division!

To all Clubs,

The EDFL will revert back to a one-tiered competition in 2015.

This decision was made by the EDFL Board of Management last night at a special meeting. It was based on information gathered over recent weeks and tabled by board members at the meeting.

The board understand some clubs are better placed to transition back to a one tier competition and as a result the following initiatives will be implemented to help equalise the competition.

Revamped point system
Seeded draw with a final eight.
Financial accountability
Each club must field four teams (Seniors, reserves, U/18’s and U/16’s)
Clubs to sign a ‘Heads of Agreement’
By-laws will be reviewed and updated.

Poowong-Loch JFC - Coming in season 2015!

We are creating the Poowong-Loch Junior Football Club (PLJFC), a new independent club (Under 10, Under 12 & Under 14) to play in the Warragul & District Junior Football League (WDJFL).

The club will offer boys and girls throughout the Poowong & Loch district to play in a one of the best junior leagues in Victoria. Run by independent committee the club will provide a clear development pathway from Poowong-Loch Auskick to PLJFC to Gippsland Power and AFL.

AFL Gippsland have given the green light and we are in the process of affiliating with the WDJFL. So it’s all systems go.

We would love football to return to Loch after 22 years, with training a definite option and potentially playing home games an option as well. We are determined to make football return to Loch.

Annual General Meeting

Hi all members,

The Poowong Football & Netball Club will hold it's Annual General Meeting on Wednesday October 29th from 8pm at the Poowong Recreation Reserve. This will be followed by a General Meeting.

I trust you are all well and have enjoyed the spell from the weekly football commitments! Time rolls on however and ironically this is probably a busier time of the year than the season proper for some. I know that behind the scenes there has been a power of work done already to build the foundations of our 2015 season.

Well with the success of the 125 th celebrations behind us we turn our attention to the monster auction on the 21st June.

President Pete Notman, Jason Hibbs and a band of helpers have put together an array of goods and services plus holidays, and many more to temp everybody.

Pete has confirmed Greg Champion from the Coodabeen Champions will be with us on the night to impart his special brand of humour to liven up proceedings.

Russell Motton will be the auctioneer for the night so keep the 21st free and get your card loaded up and support your club.

Coaching Position 2014

To all Poowong FNC members and supporters

Yesterday our Senior Coach Ron Hampton advised us that he was unable to continue to coach for the remainder of the season and as such has tendered his resignation. We wish Ron all the best for the future.

Last night the boys trained under the guidance of Senior Captain – Connor Cunningham and assistant Coach Clint Rowe. While the news had filtered around the players informally it was a credit to them all as they rallied and trained with a steely determination and resolve to get on with it.

Today we are able announce that Clinton Rowe will take over as the Senior Coach – a role he has always had aspirations to fill and a position that he is now excited about taking on.

Clinton has lead from the front foot all year on the field and will continue to do so. Adam Sheedy will remain as the off field / bench support and our leadership team within the senior side remains in tact. They are all committed to helping all players develop and grow as footballers and will work with each and every player to achieve this within a team environment.

While this news is unfortunate, this marks a new chapter and starting point in the 2014 season and it is with great heart that we take on the remainder of the season.

125th Year Celebrations

Well what a great day we had for our 125th celebrations , a massive cowd at our magnificant ground for a day that will be remembered for a another 125 years.

Great to see so many old faces in the crowd from yesteryear and although our seniors could,nt get the job done a great day was still had by all and an even better evening.

Thanks to the committee for the work they did in putting it all together, no more could have been done by our President Peter Notman to put on such a great day in our history.

Vale Tom Hafey

Poowong Football/Netball Club is saddened to hear of the passing of our great friend and supporter Tom Hafey.

Tom was a regular visitor to our club and a great inspiration to all those he came across in the football world. Our secretary Joe Green spoke to Tom only recently and although he was not well he was interested in how we were going and was hoping to get to our 125th anniversary.

Tommy will be sadly missed by all at Poowong and our condolences go to Maureen and his Family.

Netball News

On the netball front, trainings have been going well with a great level of intensity by those who have committed!

This year quite a number of girls haven't returned, mostly off pursuing other adventures! Among those, we will miss Janis Mackay, Stacey Grant and Candace Page out of the 2013 A Grade premiership side.

But we welcome quality netballers in Jaime Perry and Lisa Quaife, who has fitted in beautifully! The absences this year also provides opportunity for our own young guns coming up into senior ranks, including Abbey McNally, Mieke Polman-Short and Georgia Chiavaroli. Young Maddi Lumby will still be playing juniors, but will once again have an impact in the senior sides.

The club also welcomes a few other new faces this year, and the return of some oldies, among those Prue Blackwood, Tracy Thomas, Becky Gray, Tracey Robjant, Desiree Hancock and Kristy Hansch .

Sarah Hogan will once again lead the club, coaching A and B Grades, ably assisted by Katelyn Miller (A) and Julie Henshall (B). Melissa McNally will lead the C Grade side this year.

Barb Lumby has again been working the D Graders hard and Melissa McNally has returned to a preferred role of E Grade coach.

Prue Blackwood continues to ensure our future stars get a great start in the game in F Grade.

All the best to everyone for what will be an interesting year ahead.

125 Years Of The Poowong Football Netball Club

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the Poowong Football Neball Club. On May the 17th we will be celebrating with a big day that will involve playing our old enemy Nyora. The days events are being planned to attract all current and old supporters to come along and enjoy a celebration of this great club. There will be a book launch , bands, and some special guests to commentate on the days play. Poowong Netball Club is again up and running and after the success of last year under Sarah Hogan the club is thrilled to announce her reappointment as senior coach for 2014. This is such a positive for our team and with the addition of around 8 potential new players at training things are looking great for another successful year in the Black and White. We are fortunate to have only lost a few of our girls to work and Uni with Overseas travel also taking some away. This will give opportunity to our fantastic young players and new recruits to take their chances. We wish them all the best and hope to see you back soon.

It is our 125^th year and we will be looking to celebrate as a netball club with a proud history in the EDFL with another great year. We will be celebrating our 125^th birthday on May 17^that home against Nyora so it would be great to see all our past netballers come along and catch up with each other and watch the day’s games before the night’s celebrations. Joe Green Accident (Mulga Bill from Eaglehawk)

Stop Press - Local Bike enthusiast and repairer Joe Green is recovering after an ill fated attempt to repair his wifes bike. Joe in testing the said machine decided to disembark when it became apparent that his repairing skills on the brakes where not up to scratch. Joe flew over the handle bars in his attempt to jump over Timms Rd and landed somewhat awkwardly on the bitumen resulting in a nasty break to his collar bone . The rather embarrassed Joe is said to be recovering well and the bike has now been sent to an authorised repairer . Get well soon our esteemed secretary and remember your old saying ," If you fall off get straight back on the bike", just not one you repaired!!!!------Update on Joe,s injury is that the collar bone has not mended and has required a few screws and a plate to secure it properly and has layed our man down again. He has a slight infection but is on the mend and will be back in action soon

THIRDS COACH 2014

Pre Xmas News is Poowong has announced Peter Van'toff as thirds coach for the 2014 season. The club is so lucky to have somebody of Toffs standing in the EDFL passing on his vast knowledge to the next generation of Poowong Footballers . Toffs selfless team first approach is what we as a club have admired for his entire career and our young men couldnt be in better hands. Toff will be assisted by Matt Cozzio. it is great to see Cozzie taking on this role and know the boys will benefit from his energy and commitment to our team.

2013 Annual General Meeting

2013 AGM

We held our 2013 AGM in October and it was great to have 25 people there.

We are pleased to announce Peter Notman has accepted the role of President for the 11th year and lead us into our 125th year as a club.

Joe Green remains as secretary and Peter Fort as treasurer. Stu Beverly remains as senior Vice President and Darren Motton continues his very active role as Junior Vice President.

Melissa McNally will continue to lead the Netballers and Peter Van't Hoff will oversee the Juniors with help from Stu McCraw.

It was also great to welcome three new members to the general committee in Matt Cozzio,Jeameel Knecht and Clint Newcombe.It was great to see some young blood in Cozzi and Jamma taking on roles within the club and of course Clint continues to work tirelessly around the community and will be a great addition to our committee.

With next year being our 125th year anniversary we hope to make it a ripper. There are plenty of jobs to be allocated for next year-both on and of the field with canteen,Bars , general maintenance and upkeep plus on field team managers and surpport staff. Joe

Stu Beverly, vice pres and official table diver (didnt stick the landing so there were points deducted) Best dressed went to Eliza A. Nice dress but there is no need to mop the floor with it ( thanks Sarah for the lend of it). Most tired and emotional was a three way tie betwwen Robbie E, Dingo and the evergreen in this award Janis (can you pick me up mum) Mckay.A great night yet again and thanks to all for the clean up on sunday.Check out the Photos in the Gallery

2013 NETBALL GRANFINAL WIN

Well what can you say about grandfinal day and our A grade,another great win by our girls and a narrow loss to our D grade side.( Bad luck but well done on a great season to a side full of the future of our great netball club).

Our all conquering A grade girls were magnificent agian and controlled the game from start to finish, Super Coach Sarah playing in the mid court was judged BOG in a dominant display that showcased her unbelievable skill. Our girls have won 5 of the last 8 grandfinals which is something the whole club is proud of. Well done and Congratulations
