Lake Boga is a small town on the edge of Victoria’s Mallee, 14 kms south of Swan Hill. Like most small Mallee towns Lake Boga has its own place in history, once being a strategic RAAF Catalina flying boat base during WW II.
The township was declared in 1892, the same year the football team was formed which coincidently is the same year the Collingwood Football Club was also formed. This is believed to be the reason the Lake Boga Football Club wears vertical black and white stripes as its playing colours and has adopted the magpie as its mascot.
Lake Boga played its first match in May 1892, at home against one of the Swan Hill townships sides, the “Faugh-a-Ballaghs” (Ed. Note: “Clear-the-Way”, a term given the 87th Regiment of Foot, the Royal Irish Fusiliers, during the Napoleonic Wars. Perhaps this team comprised some expatriate Irish). Since 1892 the club has won 13 premierships, the first in 1889 the last in 2003.
Currently the Lake Boga Football and Netball Club field 6 football teams; Seniors, Reserves and Colts, U16s, U14s U12s and 6 netball teams; A grade, A reserve, B grade, 17 & Under, 15 & Under, 15 and Under reserves, 13 and Under and 13 and Under reserves each Saturday.
The clubs facilities are located at the Lake Boga Recreation Reserve, in Marraboor Street Lake Boga. The Club is managed by a Board assisted by a strong committee.
We pride ourselves on being a true community social club and we encourage family participation and the development of our local young players. A testament to this policy is the 2003 premiership side. Sixteen players of this side of 22 players either started with the North Magpie Juniors or had played at least 3 years with Lake Boga.
