Coolangatta-Tweed were brought crashing back down the earth at Sandgate on Saturday with a 54 point loss to the home team in the Pineapple Hotel Cup Australian Rules round 10 match.
The Blues, who had been looking for their third victory on the trot, went down to Sandgate 18-6(114) to 7-18 (60) in a game they had been expected to win.
Coach Scott Lawton said injuries illness and unavailability had taken its toll on the Blues this week but it was failing to capitalise on their chances that really hurt the side.
"We just weren't good enough" he said. "With five changes, we just haven't got the depth.
We will just have to try and get ourselves back up for our games against Wilston Grange.
The Blues started off well and were neck and neck with the homeside at quarter time with Sandgate up 3-1 to the Blues 2-4.
However Sandgate got the better of the second stanza and started to pull away 9-4 to 3-6.
The Blues fought back but inaccutate kicking proved constly and although they had more of the ball they were down 12-4 to 5-14 at the last break.
Jason Smith once again worked hard in the ruck with PNG pair Donald Barry and Dave Everitus also playing well and David Thayer and Matt Boyd toiling hard all day.
But in the end the Blues were coming second in the contests all over the park.
"They were getting first touch of the ball and everytime we went forward we werent converting" he said
"After half time we were doing better in one-on-one contracts but before that they were sh**house in the executing the game plan.
"The truth is that they just got away from what they should have been doing. We are competitive when we do what needs to be done."
