Mid-fielder Ben Jaenke-Cain and ruckman Dominic Beer will be favourites for the Western Magpies AFC First grade Best and Fairest Award—the Bill Pierce Medal -- when the club hold its Presentation Night this Saturday, October 11th at the clubs rooms at Chelmer.
Jaenke-Cain had an outstanding season which was rewarded with the Magpies only selection in the QAFL Team of the Year. He would have missed out on being named one of the best players in only a couple of matches this season such was his consistency.
Beer was also consistent in ruck and rarely played a poor game, often giving his midfield first use of the football. His mobility and surprising good skills below his knees as well as in the air were a highlight of his year.
Another contender is CHB Chris Hunt who was another who rarely had a bad game and did not lower his colours in many matches despite playing against some big names in the competition.
The Bill Pierce Medal is named in honour of one of the great players the club has produced and the only Magpie to win the QAFL’s highest honour, the Grogan Medal, which he won in 1983 in Sherwood’s first season in the QAFL.
Past winners of the Bill Pierce Medal include Chris Mihalopoulos (2004), David Hamill (2006), Val Pope (2008), Tim McEvoy (2007), Ben Heffernan-Roper (2009 and 2012), Ed McDonnell (2011), and Jim Rozynski (2010 and 2013). The Presentation Night with Best and Fairest counts will e held at Chelmer on this Saturday, October 11th commencing at 6.00 pm with drinks and canapes before the official events commence at 6.30 pm with a 2-course sit down dinner
