Some seasons seem longer than others and we seem to have had a long one. The much awaited final game for the season was upon us and an anticipated opportunity for a good win. With the breeze favouring the highway, we kicked to the Yabba South end of Memorial Oval. Costa out and Leroy in. Leroy? What the? Our Rugby convert obviously impressed in Deni and was to debut in the ones. And wasn’t he excited about it. His jumper presentation was a truly emotional event. Congratulations Leroy. Not the start we wanted. The game was very willing and we were immediately behind the eight ball. A goal to Moo and a great weaving dribble kick by JC kept us in the game (I hate dribblers). Lambo lined up on his brother with dinner table bragging rights at stake. Overall our effort was poor. Second to the contest and looked disinterested. Qtr time scores 2.5 to 4.3. Coach Gonzo was ropable. He gave the boys five minutes to redeem themselves (while he planned a visit to the confessional to absolve him of his ‘cussin’) or else wholesale changes would be made. It was worrying that nothing much changed in the first couple of minutes, then BOOM! A dustup! This clicked the boys into gear and away we went. Moo got one to JC in the square. A downfield free to Echo gifted Barto with one. Tater’s centre clearance ended with DC’s running goal. Moo marked and goaled from the 50. Somehow Dizzy drifted forward to pull in a pack mark and goal from outside the arc. Hicksie started well and had plenty of support from the Super Box and Big Jack was marking well and often. DC marked deep in the pocket and screwed one around the corner a-la Stevie J. A great chain of handballs starting at half back ended with another to JC. Hicksie kicked long where Leroy gathered and handballed to JC for his fourth. Barto accepted a bullet from Tater and added another. That was more like it. Half time scores 11.11 to 5.4. “The biggest risk was not taking a risk” (…Coach Gonzo 2014). Well, the boys were now willing to take risks and the play of the day was a great piece of teamwork - a brilliant chain of handballs from deep in the backline and a goal to the Echo. Barto collected on the run, faked left and handballed right to Hicko, who slotted his first. Lambo’s hard work gave us midfield possession which ended with JC snapping another. He was verging on a bag. Three quarter time scores 14.17 to 8.4. Goals to JC, Moo and Barto opened the quarter. A brilliant ‘coast to coast’ effort presented JC with another. But the big one came about half way through the last. JC popped up a handball to Leroy on the forward flank. He took off towards the goals, put in a ‘goose-step’ to slip the tackler, gave a ‘don’t argue’, took a bounce and slotted his first for The Road. His new team mates swarmed from all parts of the ground. It was as if they were giving away kebabs in the forward pocket. Fantastic. Ivan was so happy that he shouted. The mercurial JC added an eighth to his tally. What a great thrill for his parents, who were in attendance. The Echo closed out another very impressive performance with our final goal. Final scores 21.18.144 to 9.7.61. The Hoedown was a great way to finish the day.
Thanks for the year. ROADKILL
