Well, I arrived in my Smokin’ Jacket and my Dancin’ Shoes ..... and my beanie, gloves, scarf, puffer jacket and overcoat, and I still froze! Both teams had a couple of big outs. DC and Wacko for us, but Fergie was back and we really gave ourselves a good chance to get the lollies. I took on some extra duties on the day and found myself busier than a one-legged man in a bum-kicking contest, so some of usually astute detail is missing and some of it is simply made-up. Big Jack to CHF, Moo into the ruck.
Kicking to the City end, we shot out of the blocks like a flash! A free to the hardworking Tater resulted in our first. Barto provided a target and He was rewarded with our second. Moo’s tap to Tater, who drove it into the goal square, gave JC his chance to register one. ReeShe seemed to be under every pack that formed (and there were plenty) and was awarded a free about 40 out, which he confidently converted. Shanno, Joe, Smithy and Barto were doing well. Qtr time scores 4.3 to 1.1.
The foul language from the Rumba huddle was disgraceful, unnecessary and the low light of the day. Barto continued to present and kicked another one early in the quarter. He really straightened us up going forward. Anthony Andronaco (it will be easier for everyone just to call him AA) was also into the action with his maiden Murray major (MMM). Go you little beauty! Smithy continued his great opening effort with a lively display across half forward and snapped one across his body for our seventh. Tater and ReeShe were working hard. The backline, led by Congo, was very solid again, but our missed shots on goal were beginning to have mount-up – we kicked seven of them! Half time scores 7.10 to 6.1. The game could have been iced by now!
Big Jack had pulled in several big pack marks during the first half and provided a focal point for our defenders going into attack. His ‘lace-out’ bullet to Barto a highlight. Sausage roll! Moo tapped to JC, then back to Moo for a major. Somewhere in there Shanno let fly with a long bomb which also resulted in six points. An intercepted mark and run from half back ended with Bowlsie delivering to JC for his second. Three quarter time scores 11.13 to 10.5.
The sub was on and our ‘brat-pack’ was now fully manned and in full flight. The endeavour and run from Shanno, Trenna, AA, Smithy and Tom Fuller (haven’t come up with a good one for him yet) was fantastic. Moo snagged another, but it was our backline that was mostly in the focus. Congo and Joe continued their solid games. Hicksie covered a lot of ground on the highway wing. The midfielders all had to do their bit in defence, and they did. It was a terrific team effort and possibly our best to date. Two players over 22 and five under 17s. Inaccuracy told in the end. Final scores 12.15 to 15.9.
Great to see the Magoos get up for a well deserved win. Go us!
Hope you enjoyed the week off. (...the TWM have done a lion-tamers course.…).
