30 MINUTE LAPSE COSTS MAGPIES
The Western Magpies had a thirty minute place either side if halftime which cost them dearly in their 34 point loss to the second placed Palm Beach-Currumbin at PBC on Saturday.
The Pies had more scoring shots than the Lions but went down 17-6-108 to 10-14-74.
The Pies trailed at quarter time as PBC controlled the early exchanges but the Pies held on with same late first quarter goals then took control in early part of the second quarter with Matt Davis providing a focal point up forward and Matt Sondergeld, Lachlan Woods and Dom Beer giving drive from the midfield to lead by 7 points midway throughout the quarter.
For the next 30 minutes the Lions took control and with slick use of the ball on the rebound kicked 10 goals to the Pies 2 goals in the 15 minutes before halftime and 15 minutes after half time.
The Magpies did lift for the remainder of the match and narrowed the lead to 20 points late in the match before the home team kicked 2 late goals to see the final margin to 34 points. It was a patchy performance for the Magpies with Matt Davis booting 4 goals in his best game to date but having often to take on 2 defenders.
The Magpies were competitive in the match, but couldn’t finish off their hard work, coach Glenn Humphrey said.
“We had some good patches of the game and the main thing that’s disappointing is we didn’t convert on those parts of the game,” he said.
“But we showed we can compete with some of the best sides in the competition and we just need to keep working together and continue to try to get more consistency”
“It was unlucky but that’s the way it goes.”
Luke Mitchell, Sean Mewing and Chris Hunt were solid in defence, Mitch Stallard won plenty of the ball on a wing, Bryce Crossley worked hard in his recall to First grade and Ben Jaenke-Cain was tireless around ground.
The Magpies face a mini-final at home on Saturday against Mt Gravatt in front of what is expected to be a good crowd swelled by a reunion of the Sherwood players who won 8 flags in a row in the 1970s and 1980s.
