CONGUPNA FOOTBALL CLUB ROUND 11 28 June 2014
I’ve been pooped on by a number of animals this season, but let me tell you that it was no fun having the Golden Cow join in the party. Suffered a big out this week with Fergie failing to get up. The Blue Baggers won the toss and chose to go with the three goal breeze favouring the Antarctic end of Tonny Rec Reserve. It was a day that was tailor made for the tough and the chunky. Big Jack, DC and The Echo were straight into it. Congo was again proving his worth down back. Our first major came from a DC gather and offload to Diesel, who slotted it from 30. Soon after, Barto pumped one into the goal square where JC got on the end of it. Our third for the quarter came from Tom Fuller who drilled one from 30 into the teeth of the howling breeze. Reasonable result. Qtr time scores 3.2 to 5.3. Big Jack was becoming dominant both in the ruck contests and marking around the ground. The Echo’s tackling effort was inspirational. Despite having the ‘howler’ behind us, it took until the 14 minute mark to hit the scoreboard following a free plus 50 to Moo. A hardworking Tater received a free on the 50 and found Big Jack in the left forward pocket. Six points, thank you. Another free to The Echo on our 50 meter line, but with the breeze to his back, there was never any chance of this one being passed off. He sent it through at post height. Just had our noses in front at the long break. Half time scores 6.8 to 6.3. Hicksie was sent back to help in defence, but we found ourselves a point down before the bounce down. The rain arrived and it was more like the Wallabies v Warriors than The Cows v The Road. Highlight of the quarter was a rebound from KeeShe off half back which found the running Hicksie on the wing. Moving back into the centre corridor, he found The Echo at CHF who launched a rain-maker deep into the forward fifty, Arctic end. Young Trenna took a very well timed chest mark and made no mistake. Talk about windy! One kick-in from Joey almost landed in the front car park of the Ky West Pub! Three quarter time scores 7.9 to 10.4. Bowlsie was thrown forward to give us some bite, but it was a full 12 minutes before a free to Trenna resulted in our first goal. A little ‘give’ from ReeShe to DC resulted in Big Jack goaling mid-term. Late in the quarter Tater drove one from the 50 into the teeth of goal. In what resembled a human pinball game the ball was volleyed from Big Jack into the wall of defenders, back to Big Jack, and back into the wall of defenders, to JC – GOAL!!! Exciting. Agonising. Final scores 10.12 to 12.4.
Catch you next week …. (….bring your dancin’ shoes – we’re doin’ the Rumba…). ROADKILL
Under 17Congupna travelled to Tongala on a cold and wet Saturday morning looking to put up a good effort against another side looking to consolidate a finals berth. While they started the first quarter well that was where it all stopped. After quarter time they were second to the ball, not prepared to man up and the opposition showed them how to play hard running, pressure footy. In the end the final score didn't show the real dominance that the opposition had on the game. Goalkickers were Tom 2 and big Seanny 1, with better players being Lanky, Snowy, Jaco, Ringy and Sid.
Under 14’s
Last week our 4ths travelled across the State to the Arctic conditions of Tongala. Tonnie are a well drilled team who play their ground well and to their advantage, but our boys put in a 4 quarter effort, with excellent pressure on the opposition most times and our running to help our teammates time and time again. Our endeavour was first rate and the two goals came courtesy of Fyfey and Jordie G.
Award winners last week were Cooper B (Meal Voucher), Jaco (Trellys), Broph (Bottle & Beanie), Jake Organ (Sportsfirst) and Jye Clark (Congupna Shop). Good luck this week against Rumba.
Netball
A Grade - With only 2 wins from its 10 games, Congupna was always going to find it hard against the unbeaten Tongala. The game marked Congupna’s Captain Bridget Cole’s 100th game. Injuries and absences gave opportunities to 17&U players Kate Jeffery and Sophie Sidebottom, who both started. Tongala’s strong defence combined with its slick attack saw it score quickly. Congupna battled hard but struggled to get the ball through the strong Tongala defence and went into ¼ time trailing Tongala 8-17. Congupna showed improvement in the 2nd ¼ scoring 10 goals to Tongala’s 16. However, a master display from Tongala in the 2nd ½ saw it run out winners 67-24. Congupna can be proud of their fighting effort as the respective places on the ladder suggested that a score differential should have been much larger. Best on court was Flo Rendell followed by Sophie Sidebottom.
B Grade - The girls played some awesome netball to be 1 goal up at half time over the ladder leaders. The goalers from both teams were very accurate. Tonnie's very tall GK made the eventual difference, being able to rebound the few goals we missed, then capitalizing on this. Ebony and Carly were dynamite in the midcourt and made direct, strong leads to the ring to feed Kel and Abbi beautifully. Nat worked hard to shut her player down and was always an option for passing. Jak and Ash did well in defence but found the smaller goaler hard to combat. We trailed off slightly in the last quarter. We need to know we can compete with the top teams and that consistent, hard netball will achieve this. Well done girls. Awards - Kel Tucker (GV) and Carly (Ann's Waxing). Special mention to Ebony for her efforts.
C Grade - Congupna 33 def Tongala 30 Tongala proved to be extremely strong opposition. Both teams played strong netball, giving it everything. With the scores level at 1/4 & 1/2 time, there was nothing in it. The 3rd quarter saw Echuca get a run on through some accurate goaling which we were not able to match and by 3/4 time held a 5 goal lead. Some uncharacteristic changes at the break saw us steady and play to our potential. Han was a standout in the last with 8 goals under extreme pressure. Awards: GV: Han Dainton Lauren's Hair Lounge: Wend Sidey. What a game!
C Res - Well what can I say , that was a game we should have won! We came out so strong in the first quarter , only to have a second quarter that cost us dearly, third and forth quarter were better but the damage had already been done. Thanks to Han and Ella for helping out again and huge welcome back to Brooke first game after knee reco. I will say I am proud of you all for pushing thru and keeping it nice when some decisions were very disputable ! Awards. Mon and Liana
17 & Under - What a great start to the game with the first 7 goals , we continued strong thru the first quarter, but they did manage to pull us back in the second to go into half time with only a 3 goal lead, we came out strong in the third and forth to come away with another strong win Abby and Hannah goaled well considering the wind , and mid court was strong for the whole game with some great intercepts from Meg in WD and very constant drives from Eliza in wa, Awards Ab Pedretti, Meg Bromley, Eliza Linehan
15 & Under - The team continued to play consistent all game despite the one-sided score. Zoe and Em were again terrific in defence, showing their versatility. Keeley and Lilly applied pressure all game. Jess, Ella and Hannah took some lovely intercepts, with Jess showing us her great speed over the court. Hopefully Reagan is back to play soon after her disappointment in injuring herself. Awards - Video Ezy - Ella Sidey, McDonalds - Em McColl
