Seniors
It was the Maggies that messed on me this week. Bugger! I’ll be covered in all varieties of animal poop by the end of the season if something doesn’t change. Our Club continues to blood the youngsters, and this week heralded the much awaited debut of Luke Smith. Luke joined an elite group of fellow thirds players in Matt Shannon, Trent Greening, Joel Brett, Matthew Teitz and Anthony Andronaco who have been presented with their senior jumper this year. First quarter saw Trenna and Smithy very lively across half forward. Trenna marked, received a 50m penalty and goaled. Moo got onto the end of a Hicko pass to goal from the 50, and young Smithy was rewarded for his tackling pressure with a free from the netball pocket. Hard up on the boundary, 30 out, he casually slotted his first senior six pointer. Big Jack, The Echo and Bowlsie were all prominent. Qtr time scores 3.2 to 2.3. Coach Gonzo liked our pressure and run, but reminded the troops not to over use the ball given the conditions. Alas, the curse of the goal-less quarter struck again. The first 18mins was played in our back half. Now that makes it bloody hard to score! Tater was providing great run. Wacko showed great attack on the ball. Congo was dominant and Bowlsie continued his good form. Half time scores 3.4 to 6.9. The TWM were not happy. ‘Butchered’ and ‘disgraceful‘ were a couple of adjectives used. The challenge issued; the boys responded by outscoring the Maggies in the third. Re-She earned a free, but the advantage saw Trenna put one through off the carpet. A free to The Echo saw him goal from 40. A boundary throw in at the Members saw Smithy lob one into the goal square where Joey slippered it through. The backline continued to be very solid, and Tater and DC were in everything. An inspired effort, but much more would be required to get home. Three quarter time scores 6.7 to 8.10. Snowy was subbed on, but it took us 15mins to find him. A leading chest mark saw him goal from 30. A strong Congo mark at half back saw the ball in Ferg’s hands before ending with Diesel who goaled from 30. Another boundary throw in saw Moo tap to Tater, with quick hands to Smithy for his second. All over, Rover. Final scores 9.8 to 13.11.
Catch you next week …. (….what the hell is a Purp?). ROADKILL
Reserves
It was a very disappointing day for our reserves team who from the outset were never in the contest. We have showed considerable improvement throughout the year but this week we took a backward step. The beauty of footy is you have the opportunity to redeem yourself the following week and with a very winnable game today I know our players will come to play with the right attitude and have a real crack. Better players on the weekend were Alex Hall, Nathan Cuthbert, Lucas Jefferies, Paul Simpson, and Todd Bush
4ths
Last week we played top team Moama Magpies, who showed us why they are the team to beat this year in under 14’s. Although out-bodied and out-played the pleasing thing is we never gave up trying. Some of our passages of play were simply sensational. In one passage alone we laid 5 really effective tackles resulting in turnovers all within a couple of minutes. Coach Ed in his aftermatch speech picked out each player highlighting what they had contributed to the team. A big welcome to Bailey Talarico (Beanie & Bottle Award) who acquitted himself very well in his debut game for the club.
Other Awards went to Connor Watters (Congupna Shop) who played arguably his best game for the club; Broph’s (Trelly’s) attack on the ball and blind turn in front of the members brought warm applause. ‘Lord’ Noah Culpin’s (Family Meal Voucher) leadership, strong talk and direction on the field and superb general play highlighted why he is so valuable to the team. The Gee Whiz Brothers each performed heroics with Jordie (Sportsfirst) taking timely marks across the ground and tackling kids twice his size, whilst younger brother Brodie was just simply superb down back and always looked for the best option when giving off a pass.
A Grade - Congupna welcomed Ash Cathy for her second game and first start of the season, for their game against Moama. Moama started the stronger with their defenders making life difficult for the Congupna feeders to get the ball to their goalers. While at the other end, Moama’s goalers converted every opportunity to establish a 19-8 lead at quarter time. The injection of 17&U player Hannah Omera for her first game improved Congupna’s performance a little but Moama was still too strong and lead at half time 33-17. The second half continued to be a dominant performance by Moama who ran out winners 68-37. Best on court for Congupna was Ash Cathie followed by Hannah Omera.
B Grade - Our slow start to the game was the difference to our end result. We lost the last half by 1 goal but couldn't make up the first half deficit. Our defenders stepped up the pressure throughout the game, making a difference. Ash and Abbi were able to free up the ring second half and convert a high percentage of goals. Midcourters had tough opposition and had to work hard. Well done to Kel in WA showing a wise head is an asset to setting up play. A consistent 4 quarters this week will get us back on track. Go girls. Awards - GV - Nat Ryan, Ann's Waxing - Kel Tucker
15 & Under - A fantastic first half set out girls up for a great win. All players worked well as a team both in attacking and defensive modes. Great to see the girls lifting their work rate and continually adjusting to what was happening on court. Well done girls on a terrific team win. Awards - Keeley (Video Ezy), Zoe Hicks (McDonalds)
12 & Under - Another really tough game for the girls this week! Up against second top team, all the girls tried their hardest and continued to fight right to the end! Little bit to work on at training this week but we will get there! Girls have improved so much since round one! Good luck today girls I know you will put in 100% like you do every other week! Awards went to Kaitlyn Poole and Steph Fleming
