CONGUPNA FOOTBALL CLUB ROUND 6 17 May 2014
Seniors:
Whilst enjoying the week off I researched the definition of ram – random access memory, water powered cyclic pump, or sheep copulater – how extraordinary! In a weekend of huge upsets, The Woods, The Tiges and The Road were all soundly beaten. The late withdrawal of JC allowed for the recall of Brayden Lambert to the ones, along with teenage debutant Matt Teitz as our sub. Pre-game, Coaches Gonzo, Peter Sheehan and Josh pleaded with their charges to take risks at every opportunity and be prepared to switch the play. Run and carry was the message. The opening stanza was a torrid affair, with both sides determined to get on top early. This resulted in many stoppages and a bit of ‘biffo’ at half back, before Joey gathered on the run and passed off to Diesel who slotted one from 30. Jack Ellis’ ruck work was good right from the start. Qtr time scores 1.1 to 2.0. Both sides continued to apply great pressure on the ball carrier, which for us, resulted in multitude of turnovers and several misdirected kicks. Congo stood tall in the last line. A scrambly forward thrust to an over-crowded goal square saw Hicko somehow slip one through. Ineffective tackles gave the Rams opportunity to run and score. We looked to have some serious mismatches in our forward 50 at times, but were unable to capitalise on them. In a case of ‘déjà vu’ (re. Numurkah), I thought we were lucky to be so close at the bell. Half time scores 2.2 to 4.8. The long break saw some serious positional changes made with forwards going back, backs going forward and many supporters going to the bar. Turnovers, under little pressure, continued to plague us. One of the worst goal umpiring decisions I have ever seen resulted in a yellow card (hence forth, canary) being produced, (as if we could afford to lose one!). There will also be an internal inquiry into the ‘magnetism’ the scoreboard wing has for ‘Congupna kicked’ footballs. Daniel Bowles had been creative both back and forward. Three quarter time scores 2.3 to 8.10. Q4 saw Teitzy cross the line for the first time. Wacko woke the scorers from their slumber as he potted one from 45. Back to the centre and a clean clearance hit Moo up for our second of the term. The sheep herders were running out of legs. Harry Moran, who was well rested to this point, was sent straight into the engine-room with great results. The increased pressure at the bounce resulted in a Deni turnover to Barass-DOG, handball to Jack Ellis and on to Bowlsie for another ‘sausage roll’. Hicksie and Shanno were still running hard. Hicko got on the end of another to take home a pair, but it was over far too soon. Another two or three quarters and I reckon we’d have ‘ad ‘em! Final scores 6.8 to 11.12.
Reserves:
We put up a much better performance this week in the reserves in what was a very close encounter. We applied ourselves much better than the previous week with our pressure and ball use much better. Deni were a bigger and more physical side than us sticking their tackles, this lead to some turnovers and we knew it would be a hard slog all game. Unfortunately some disciplinary issues arose and in the third quarter we were reduced to 16 players and Deni 17, when this happened all our players lifted and we played some really good footy. Joel Costa was again very good taking strong marks all around the ground. Paul Simpson tried hard all day in the middle.
Under 17:
We all rolled up on Saturday looking forward to a good game of footy between two sides that had 4 wins apiece. The game started in bright sunshine with both sides confident of their chances. The first quarter saw both sides start full of running and with the game being free flowing they scored frequently. At quarter time Congupna led by 7 points. The game started to slow up in the second quarter with the heat starting to take its toll. Congupna kicked 3 goals in this quarter to lead by 21 points at half time. With the heat taking its toll and both sides becoming more defensive the scoring slowed up in the 3rd quarter with both sides only kicking one goal each. In the last quarter Congupna ran the game out kicking 3 goals to win by 37 points in what was a great game of footy to watch. Goalkickers were Trent Greening with 4 goals, Anthony Andronaco with 3, Brayden Thomas with 2 and singles to Jak Trewin and Luke Smith. Better players in a very even performance were T Teitz, P Docking, H O’Meara, Nic Jacobson, J Brett and Luke Smith.
Under 14:
Round 6 had our fourths pitted against a taller and talented Deni line-up. But our boys were up to the challenge. It was a great 4 quarter effort by our lads. Again the scoreboard wasn’t our focus but our intensity, our skills, decision making and improvement were. And in those areas we nailed it. Good solid games by Fyefy, Poolie, The Gee ‘Whiz’ brothers & Cooper Bromley.
Trellys’ Award went to Jaco for his great work around the ground; Sportsfirst went to Ayden Shannon whose endeavour & attack on the ball was first rate; his ‘little’ brother Joel won the Congupna Shop voucher. The tough in and under work and tackling from Pat Jaco and Joel Shanno, even though giving up many centimetres in height and many kilos in weight is extraordinary week after week; Harri Ring-a-ding-ding (Beanie & bottle) played a sensational 3 quarter game after starting on the bench, his aggression in his tackles and drive out of the backline were a pleasure to watch; Zac “Attack” Watt (hat) played his best game for the club when we needed him the most when our Ruck Liam went down with an achilles injury. Zac stood up to the challenge and showed everyone what talent he has. And Broph’s tremendous Captains game down back was arguably his best for the club, his drive from defence, improved kicking to a target and a follow –up after disposal was pleasing to watch and that got him a Club Meal Voucher.
Netball
A Grade - Congupna started with a full strength side for the first time in few weeks and were determined to put up a good performance against the quality side, Deniliquin. The first quarter was a tight tussle but Deni were a little better and went into the first break 15-10 ahead. The second quarter saw a knee injury to defender Tegan Fairley, followed shortly afterward by an injury to goaler Laura Cahoon, with neither player returning to the court. This lead to Congupna’s game unravelling, Deni capitalising on every mistake and dominating the remainder of the game to run away winners 61-24. Best on court for Congupna was Emma Rendell followed by Mel Kittlety. Congupna will be pleased to have the week off and will be sweating on the outcomes of the two injuries.
B Grade - What a wonderful effort by our team who commenced the match with 5 B graders. Hannah Sidey and Abbi C were on fire in goals, combining again beautifully. Hannah O'Meara again worked tirelessly all game after playing 17s and gelled with our senior girls. With 3 defenders injured and ill, they all played hard all game, pushing through the barriers. Emma was rebounding superbly, Mickaylah and Jak were intercepting constantly. Ebony was playing a great attacking game until she came off injured when Nat arrived to take over. Hopefully after the bye we can fill all 7 positions with B graders and avoid injury and absence!! Awards - Abbi (birthday girl) and Emma.
C grade started and finished strongly in another super team performance. The defensive end was a highlight with Kara Playing an awesome game at GD, Rach at GK and Rhiannon (Ram) was on fire on the wing. A big thankyou to Sophie Sidey who played a half, puling in many intercepts and rebounds. We face some strong competition in the coming weeks and will need to keep working hard if we want the rewards. Go C Grade! GV Award: Rhiannon Leahy. Lauren's Hair a Lounge: Kara Thomas
15 & Unders - Well done to the girls who recorded a victory against Deni. We are slowly seeing improvement in areas we work on at training with our new girls. When we are all focused and working hard at the same time we can play some impressive netball. Keep listening hard at training. Well done to Sophie for doing what had been asked of her. Hannah played a strong game in goals with Ella and Reagan worked tirelessly all game. Thanks to Katie for being the go-to-girl and playijng in defence and centre. Keep up the hard work girls. Awards - Nandos - Hannah, Video Ezy – Sophie
12 & Unders - Without regular coach Sarina, the girls tried their little hearts out for Sophie and Sarah. They came up against a very tall and older Deni team. They girls worked on coaching pointers given during the game and still had a smile on their faces at the end of the game. That's the spirit girls!! Awards - Maccas - Steph Fleming, Video Ezy - Ruby Ryan
