Last week we had The Blues …….. and all week we’ve had the blues!
In what was to be a dirty day for The Road, one of the highlights for many supporters was the debut of Joel ‘Snowy’ Brett for his first senior game, and based on what we saw, I would think that Snowy has a very bright future ahead of him. Another highlight for me, on such a grey and gloomy day,
was (Regan) Re-She’s new wheels. His luminous orange boots stood out like beacons in the dim Numurkah mist. Whilst the team was forced to make a few significant selection changes this week, Coach Gonzo declared his support for the playing group and his confidence in the game plan which got them so close the week before. From very early in the game it seemed that The Blues were more desperate and wanted the ball more than our boys. A right foot ‘banana’ from the pocket by Hicko was our scoring highlight. Becky also goaled after a 50m penalty. Qtr time scores 2.1 to 4.4.
The second stanza saw Hicksie working into the game and Ferg looked to go up a gear. The Ellis boys and Bowlsie were also getting more of the ball across half back. JC, who had been working very hard across the half forward line, was cowardly crunched from behind after marking, but did a ‘Lazarus’ to recover and played on. Great ‘switch and run from behind’ play provided Wacko with what may have been our best team goal. Joey missed his opportunity for the ‘Mark-of-the-Year’, and Hicko snagged his second banana, if you don’t mind! Half time scores 4.2 to 6.6. The message at half time was one of composure and the need for better use of the ball. Despite how poorly we had been playing, we were still in the game. Bigger bodies at the centre bounces were beginning to have an effect. Re-She was ‘in and under’ as usual, but was being thrown around like a ragdoll. His leg injury late in the quarter led to his substitution and Snowy took the field. Most of the third quarter was played in the Blue’s 50 and put our backmen under great pressure. Congo worked tirelessly and Shanno continued to run and present options. We didn’t bother the scorers too much. Three quarter time scores 4.4 to 11.8. A few positional changes looked to give us a bit more zip in the final quarter, but the horse had bolted. Snowy ‘dribble-kicked’ his maiden goal from 30mtrs out on the boundary, and also had a hand in goals to Bowlsie and JC. Bowlsie goaled again before we were finally put out of our misery. Final scores 8.9 to 14.9.
Reserves:
The reserves were outclassed and out worked by a very fit Numurkah outfit. We were put under an a lot of pressure which affected our skills and decision making that lead to a significant loss. While we continued to try hard all day we could only manage 2 goal that were scored in the last quarter by Braden Thomas who filled in from the 3rds. While each week we have improved as a team this game showed us we still have a lot of work to do. Alex Hall was best on ground while Braden Thomas had a very good game. Others to play well were, Joel Costa, Jaiden McCann, Jesse Anderson, Adam Bovell.
Under 17:
Congupna took the journey down the road to Numurkah on Saturday keen for a win to stay in touch with the top teams. The boys started slowly, kicking to packs and not giving to the player in the best position. After having this pointed out to them at quarter time, the boys started to run and open the game up in the second quarter to hold a 3 goal lead at half time. In the second half the boys continued to run and work together and kept the scoreboard ticking over for a win. Goal kickers were Trenta with 3, Snowy and Anthony with 2 and singles to Jac, Jaco and Alex Smith. Everyone played well with younger players Woodsy, Fraser Opie, Mitch Collins, Alex Smith and Jaco in the awards.
Under 14:
Last week against the Numurkah Blues our young chargers really took the game on. Irrespective of the score, we never gave up trying. Our first half inparticular was impressive with the second term alone having our 4ths lay nearly 20 effective tackles in 16 minute quarter. It is so pleasing that our work rate is up and that we will get better through hardwork and perseverance.
Fyfey chipped in with two (our only 2) very classy goals. Awards this week went to the ‘welcome back kid’ Cooper Bromley who was given a hard task in running with the Blues best player and acquitted himself very well and took away the Trellys award. The Sportsfirst Award went to Liam Quibell who rucked brilliantly and was a key mover for us around the ground. The Congupna Shop award went to Michael (Mickey Mac) McIlfatrick who took on bigger opponents and never stopped trying hard. ‘Lord’ Noah Culpan picked up a bottle and beanie for his gut running and strong endeavours for the ball and a hat was awarded to Brodie Poole whose precision kick-outs were a feature to watch. The family meal voucher went to Broph who needs new boots as he wore them out with the amount of kicks he amassed. Keep working hard lads, you are on the right track (Road).
