Yes it is hard to believe that suddenly the seniors are on top of the first division ladder for the first time since round 12 in 2008. A welcome surprise after the two sides above us in Balwyn and Scoresby were beaten. Maybe now we can express our dislike of the uneven 12 team draw, without others calling it “sour grapes”.
Right from the opening bounce on Saturday, our superior aggression at the footy was evident. By quarter time with a score line of 6-6 to 1 point, the game was effectively over. It was again exciting to see young Shane Davidson, Nick Mendes and Lachie Johns have such an influence and a credit to our junior Club. We actually had 12 ex VFC Juniors in the side this week. It was equally exciting to see the Captain Ryan Mullett exhibit all his wonderful skills and to have the No 4 Grant McCarthy back in the senior side.
It was a pleasure to come away from another cold wet rainy day at Blackburn with a smile. We had not beaten them since Round 2 2008. But from the players point of view they desperately wanted to make up for that very disappointing 5 point, last minute loss in round 6.
Although we are miles from knowing the season outcome, full credit must go to Kris Barlow, Jeff Rudd and their assistants for the current situation of having both open age sides heading their respective ladders.
However, being on top brings on the task of staying there and next Saturday against the fourth placed Scoresby is out first test. The reality also, is that we are only one game and percentage ahead of the Noble Park in 5th spot.
The Reserves & Under 19’s also had wins, with the Under 19’s fantastic victory another break through after numerous losses at the hands of Blackburn.
The three wins also helped us to consolidate our lead in the Club championship an award we would very much like to win.
