The Tigers have grabbed hold of the number 1 spot on the Summerland League table with both hands and are refusing to give an inch, despatching the defending premiers by 76 points in a formidable display in Byron on Saturday.
On a very wet and heavy track the Tigers started well into a strong wind to lead by 4.4 - 28 to 1.2 - 8 at the first break.
However the Magpies are a experienced side and came out firing in the second term to kick 4 goals to the lack lustre Tigers 2 and trail by only 9 points at the main break.
As has been the case all season when the Tigers have taken their eyes of the road the Skipper and Coach have stepped up at half time and inspired the team to lift it’s performance. With memories of the first round loss to the Magpies still fresh the Tigers came out after half time and proceeded to wipe the Pies of their own park.
It was a terrific performance from the Tigers back 6 who have bonded into a strong unit and only allowed Byron to score 1 point in the whole second half.
This rigid defence provided the platform for the Tigers inform onballers including Johnno, Jai, Arnold, Jimmy and Bones who provided consistent wins out of the middle and quality service to the forwards.
In a day for the small men a special mention for the big man Bolty who moved into the ruck position after an injury to star forward Roundy caused a reshuffle. Bolty played like a rover and was a major contributor the Tigers dominance in the second half.
In a welcome return from injury Bones starred up front kicking 6 goals, and was aptly supported by big Wilson with 3 goals, good performances from the Tiger’s other little men in Nugget and Benny who’s ferocity at the ball is rattling the other teams in the league.
After a long period on the road (only 3 home games from 11 rounds) the Tigers have now beaten all comers away and are looking forward to a series of home games.
This weekend it’s back to TIGERLAND where the Tiger’s will take on Lismore at Pottsville Oval on Saturday at 2pm.
Thanks to the Tiger’s support staff and supporters who travelled to Byron to cheer home the Tigers.
