What is AFL?
Australian football is Australia's premier spectator sport, drawing average crowds of over 35,000 for each game at the highest level.
It is one of the most exciting, skillful, tough, and fast paced games in the world, played by some of the fittest athletes on the planet!
It is the indigenous sport of Australia that has been played for over 150 years.
And yes! It is played here in Canada, along with 13 other official AFL International Affiliates around the world.
You can call it either AFL, Australian Football, Aussie Rules, or Footy
About the game:
The sport is played with an oval ball between two teams of eighteen players each on a large oval-shaped field, with the aim of the game to kick the ball through the two tallest goal-posts which are set at either end of the ground.
There are variations in the game which allow it to be played on smaller, rectangle fields, or inside a gymnasium or indoor soccer pitch. Children and youth play have a smaller playing area to accommodate their developmental stage.
