16th April Rnd5 Swans Vs Noosa @ Kandanga, Mary Valley
Wide Bay Challenge Champions 2009
The Maroochy RSL Swans have taken out the first peice of silverware on offer the year by defeating the Noosa Pirates in the final of the Wide Bay Challenge at Wises Rd on Sunday.
The competition involved 15 clubs from within the Wide Bay region which stretches from the Sunshine Coast to Bundaberg. Played in a round robin format the boys remained undefeated in all of their 5 games to be named champions for 2009. Wins against our first round opponents for the upcoming Caloundra Rsl Cup season Bribie Island and Bundaberg Wests on Saturday and Beerwah and Gympie on Sunday saw the Swans advance to the final to take on three time premiers Noosa.
After only a twenty minute turn around from their last game, the Swans scored first through new recruit Justin Otto out wide, slicing through from close to the line. Otto then calmly potted the conversion from the sideline to take the score to 6 nil. Noosa hit back almost immediatly with a try under the posts to bring the scores to 6 all at halftime. The Swans were better for the break and scored again outwide through Gary Beard who scored a try in all 5 games. Justin Otto then carbon copied his previous kick from the sideline, steering the ball straight over the black dot with an amazing conversion. Noosa sent a scare with another try to the Pirates with 5 minutes remaining to leave a conversion attempt by former NRL player Noel Goldthorpe the difference. Luckily the Pirates halfback was unsucessfull and the Swans remained in front by two. Maroochydore then repelled a final attacking raid to claim victory and be named 2009 Wide Bay Challenge champions. Great effort boys.
Defence was the key for the weekend, only letting in 18 points in 5 games. The win also showed that the club has great depth this year with many of last years 18's stepping up and some handy new recruits displaying that '09 should be a good year for the Maroochydore Swans considering we had 5 representitive players on the sideline with injuries.
