The Thomson Football Club was formed on the 18th of March 1953 in St Phillips Church Hall, Fagg Street, Thomson by a group of local parents. Club meetings were held in the Tate Street Primary School, private homes and later in a shed at the Geelong Show Grounds.
The club adopted the Tate Street School colours of purple and gold and played its early practice matches at the school. Match games were played on Richmond Crescent with the East Geelong Football Club charging Thomson 5 shillings per game to use their change rooms.
In 1954 the club acquired the Geelong Show Grounds for their matches and an under 18 team was formed. Halfway through the 1955 season the club had to vacate the show grounds due to the surface becoming unplayable. The club had no where to go. The club approached the owners of vacant land on the corner of Carr Street and St Albans Road, and they allowed the club to use part of their horse paddock (now Housing Commission homes). Goal posts were put up and a tent was used for a change room and the O'Hara family across the road kindly gave permission for people to use their home toilet.
Part way through the 1956 season the Godfrey Street oval was born. Consisting of a graded oval with no fencing and an old army hut used for change rooms. The current change rooms were built in 1967 and doubled as a social club until the current complex was built in 1980.
Thomson has produced three League footballers in Larry Donohue, David Manson and Paul Jeffries.
