“We have a good blend of youth and experience, the players attitude has been great and can’t wait for the game to start,” said EDFL coach Aussie Jones at the Interleague Jumper presentation night held last at the Cora Lynn Football Club. Jones was referring to this Saturday’s Worksafe Interleague clash against the Maryborough-Castlemaine Football League at Princes Park, Maryborough.
Jones is confident the selected side will acquit itself well and he has good reason. Newcomers to the league led by Garfield veteran and big match performer Justin Berry, tall Koo Wee Rup utility Shaun Marusic and Nilma Darnum will-o-the wisp forward Jason Wells, the latter two who have returned to the league this year can be expected to pose big nuisance value for the hosts. Interestingly only five players led by Cora Lynn quartet Tim Payne, Jeremy Monckton, Ryan Gillis and speedster Jackson Dalton along with Buln Buln ruckman Matt Gray and who has been selected as Captain with the absence of Shane Brewster (knee injury) will back up after playing in last year’s big victory over the Mid Gippsland league.
Six players 21 years of age or younger have been selected in the final twenty-five and two rising stars of the league Bunyip forward Jack Blakey and Nyora midfielder Dylan Heylen, both 19 years of age will make their interleague debut at senior level. After a decade of senior football Nar Nar Goon hard nut ruck rover Brent Hughes and Koo Wee Rup swingman Ben Miller have both been rewarded with selection. Longwarry’s Tye Holland and Ricky Clarke along with Hughes and Berry should provide the midfield grunt, while Tim Payne, Zac Vansittart and Garfield’s Adam MacGibbon the steadiness in defence. Buln Buln’s Mitch Nobelius and Jackson Dalton can be expected to provide good pace and run across the forward line in what shapes as a well balanced team.
The game will start at 2pm. It will be preceded by an U/18 Interleague clash starting at 11:45am and the program on Saturday will commence at 9:45am. The U/18 EDFL will field plenty of players will senior experience led by Dylan Wilson, Jack Nuttall, Codey Andrews, Will Jolley, Sean Masterson and Mitch Brown to name just a few. Some of the boys to keep an eye on in the U/16s include Longwarry trio Jesse Davies, Kane Oldham and Jedd Serong, Ellinbank’s Joel Paredes and Nar Nar Goon rover Callum Tyler to again name just some of the boys in good form in the opening rounds of the season.
Good luck to all involved in the Interleague campaign both on and off the field.
